President Kagame Hosts Oromia Leader for Talks on Rwanda-Ethiopia Relations

On January 12, 2025, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda welcomed Shimelis Abdisa, the President of Ethiopia’s Oromia Region, for important talks on deepening bilateral relations.

The two leaders discussed ways to enhance cooperation between Rwanda and Ethiopia. Their countries already share strong ties through agreements in trade, sports, education, disaster management, and more. These partnerships were formalized in February 2024 with the signing of agreements aimed at promoting political collaboration, tourism, public health, and investment.

One key area of focus during their meeting was how to further expand business and investment relations, as well as military cooperation. Both countries also benefit from seamless air travel services, with RwandAir and Ethiopian Airlines working together to connect Rwanda and Ethiopia.

Shimelis Abdisa has been leading the Oromia region since 2019. Oromia is Ethiopia’s largest region, home to millions of people, and rich in natural resources like gold and gemstones. It also plays a significant role in Ethiopia’s political landscape.

The relationship between Rwanda and Ethiopia is built on respect and mutual interest. The two countries have signed agreements in various sectors, including law, media, and culture. Their collaboration continues to grow, benefiting both nations.

In 2024, the bond between Rwanda and Ethiopia was further strengthened when Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, visited Rwanda to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. This visit followed another in 2021, when Dr. Abiy Ahmed spent two days in Rwanda to discuss further ways to strengthen their ties.

The continued collaboration between Rwanda and Ethiopia highlights the positive impact of their shared commitment to peace, prosperity, and mutual support.
