Rwanda and Germany Strengthen Partnership with New Climate Change and Environmental Protection Agreement

Rwanda and Germany have signed a significant agreement worth 30 billion Rwandan Francs (about 20.97 million Euros) to support projects aimed at fighting climate change.

The agreement was signed by Rwanda’s Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Yusuf Murangwa, and Germany’s Ambassador to Rwanda, Heike Uta Dettmann, along with other officials from both countries.

This partnership is part of a long-standing and strong relationship between Rwanda and Germany. In December 2023, Rwanda’s Senate President, Dr. Kalinda François Xavier, met with Ambassador Dettmann to discuss how both countries can further strengthen their collaboration.

They explored areas like economic growth, healthcare, agriculture, and trade, with a particular focus on supporting sustainable development projects through Germany’s development agency, GIZ.

Germany has been a key partner in Rwanda’s growth, providing support in areas like health, agriculture, and trade. In July 2023, the two countries launched the "Pro Poor Basket Fund," with 16 million Euros (about 20 billion Rwandan Francs) to support vulnerable communities in 16 districts. This fund is used for projects such as improving sanitation, healthcare, education, and agricultural infrastructure.

Germany’s support also includes a 98.1 million Euro (100 billion Rwandan Francs) partnership agreement signed in 2022. This funding is aimed at improving vocational education, healthcare, and environmental conservation in Rwanda.
