Smugglers intercepted with bales of used clothes

Police in Nyagatare and Kirehe districts, on Wednesday, July 26, impounded nine bales of second-hand clothes commonly known as caguwa from suspected smugglers.

Five bales were impounded Wednesday morning in Kirehe District, Kigarama sector, Kigarama cell in Rugari, from three suspected smugglers, who were taken into custody.

Four other bales were recovered from a house in Nyagatare District, Matimba sector, Cyembogo cell in Kamahoro village. The alleged smuggler fled during the operation, according to Superintendent of Police (SP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region.

"The two separate successful operations were conducted at about 06a.m and 8a.m in Kirehe and Nyagatare, respectively, after the Police responded to credible information from area residents," SP Twizeyimana said.

He warned against smuggling and illegal cross-border, and thanked the public for their role in fighting unlawful acts.

Article 87 of the law on tax procedures provides an imprisonment of between 2 and 5 years, for tax evasion.
